Planting a garden is a great way to prepare for the spring. Gardening is also a hobby that can be a rewarding way to display your hard work for all to see. The best time to plant bulbs is best done at the end of fall prior to the spring you would like them to bloom. Before beginning your gardening it is necessary to have all of the items you will need for starting the project. You will need seeds or bulbs, a tool for digging, markers, mulch and landscaping edging.

If you prefer to use seeds, they can be planted in small containers and grown indoors until spring. When spring planting time arrives you would simply transplant the plants into your outside garden area. Buy the seeds early enough for them to grow strong and able to be transplanted. They should be placed in small containers with good drainage to prevent any fungus or mold developing on them.

If the area you have chosen for your garden is in a shaded area, the seeds you choose should be flowers that grow well in the shade. Some flowers do well in both shaded and sunny areas so read the packet well before purchasing.

Keep the containers in a window or other area that gets a lot of sunshine. Do not over water or overfeed the seedlings. If they are placed in a window the containers should be rotated weekly to provide sufficient light to the entire plant.

Do not get disappointed if you do not notice a plant sprouting up in only a couple of days. It takes a couple of weeks for the plant to take hold and begin to grow. The plants will be about six to seven inches tall when it comes time to plant in spring.

When ready to plant outside, dig a hole for each plant that is approximately six inches in depth. Gently remove the plant from the container and place in the hole. Cover with dirt and gently pack around the plant. For added benefit in growth use soil that comes purchased with added nutrition for the plants.

Once you have all of the plants in the garden, mark the area with small markers to be able to identify what has been planted in each area. This is important if you have planted flowers requiring extra feedings so that it is only put in this area. After placing the markers, spread mulch throughout the garden. The mulch should be two inches thick. If you have decorative items put them in the garden next.

Dig an edge completely around the outside of garden area for placing the landscaping edging. The edging will keep the mulch and flowers from shifting outside of garden and into the yard should a heavy rain occur. Keep the garden free from weeds, watered and given nutrients regularly.
