The warmer months are coming, and now is the time to start considering what you will do with your patio or garden area’s outdoor patio lighting. Lighting your outdoor area will let you to stay out on your patio long after dark, and you will enjoy your outdoor living area that much more.
There is more involved in lighting your patio than just using a few solar lights. Outdoor patio lighting has taken on an entirely new appearance, incorporating recent technological innovations as well as updated, modern designs.
The wonderful thing about outdoor patio lighting is the way it allows you to express your creativity. There are no rules to abide by, and the outdoors provides an amazing backdrop for your lighting. Candles can make a great addition to any type of lighting. Not only are they very affordable, but they establish mood and ambiance.
Just make sure that you enclose the candle in a glass fixture to protect the flame from any late night winds. Mason jars work great and they add an unexpected charm. For a nice focal point on the patio table, place 3 or 4 candles in a line in a rectangular glass vase.
Torches can be used as an alternative to candles. Some use oil as fuel while others provide a place to insert a candle. They work well when placed along a garden path or around a patio dining area.
You can also find some oil torches that have citronella oil to ward off bugs. If you want an alternative outdoor source for your lighting, install some patio fixtures or lamps. For a nice touch, change out your standard patio light to an outdoor patio lantern. Your guests will not be expecting it.
An added benefit is that it will be nice to look at even when it is daylight outside. However, it is best to keep the lighting as warm as possible. In other words, choose bulbs with a warm tone. This will keep the atmosphere cozy and ambient for your family and friends.
Bringing some of your inside lighting outdoors provides another option for outside lighting. If an awning covers your patio dining area, bring out a few table lamps from your home and place them on tables near the patio. Floor lamps can make the atmosphere quite cozy. Always make sure you are using electric outlets that are suitable for outdoor use.
Outdoor electrical outlets can be installed by an electrician very inexpensively. An electrician would also be able to install dimmer switches, which will let you increase the light level as the evening darkens into night. You can have fun with outdoor patio lighting, and a few simple touches that are quite affordable will make your area much more inviting.
