Container gardening is an increasingly popular alternative to traditional gardening.

Due to inadequate space, using the available areas on a patio, porch, or balcony can allow many people to satisfy their desire for a functional garden.

Container gardening is a great way to both fill your home with soothing fragrances and provide healthy and delicious vegetables for all of your families meals.

However, there are a few guidelines that one must follow when using the container gardening method.

1) You will want to be certain that all of your garden containers are in an area that will provide enough sunlight for your vegetables to grow while allowing easy access for watering.

Though most of the vegetables you will be growing in your garden require much sunlight, there are some vegetables that can be grown in shaded areas such as cabbage and spinach.

However, a rotation of the containers is advisable to ensure that these particular vegetables get at least some sunlight when possible.

2) Depending on varying hydration requirements for different vegetables, water your containers one to two times daily.

3) Tomatoes, lettuce, and radishes are just a few of the vegetables that are specifically known to thrive under the conditions provided by container growing.

Eggplants and most peppers can also be great for container gardening.

4) Make sure you are using the best soil for your garden. Some synthetic soils are specifically engineered to support growth of container grown vegetables.

Synthetic soils are known to contain a calculated mix of peat moss, perlite, sawdust and other materials that are known to provide vegetables with sufficient nourishment.

While the soils ability to hold moisture is the key, preventative measures are also recommended to keep your soil free of weeds.

5) There are many different types of containers available for use in gardens.

Keeping in mind specific requirements for your vegetables, Clay, ceramic, or even plastic containers may be used. You can also opt for more available alternatives such as bushel baskets, drums, gallon cans, tubs or wooden boxes etc.

6) Finally, it is of utmost importance that you are careful while harvesting the products of your hard work. Remember to set aside some seeds during your harvest for future projects.
